AMERICA’S BASES FOR DEFENCE
Precautions Against Attack on U.S.
WARNING BY ARMY SECRETARY
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON. April 29. An enemy nation, under present conditions, could “seize bases in the Azores and Alaska.” for an attack on the United States, said the Secretary of the Army (Mr Kenneth Royall) in evidence to the Senate Appropriations Committee to-day. “We must not stand idly by and let them do it,” he added. “We must hold bases in Newfoundland, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland and the Azores.” Mr Royall said the country, could not rely on aircraft alone for its defence against sudden attack, but must “deny the enemy bases from which to attack.” The committee by 16 votes to one. decided that funds should be allocated for the immediate expansion of the Air Force to 70 groups. This action was an endorsement for a bill approved by the House of Representatives to provide 3.198,000,000 dollars for the purpose. The total provision was 822.000,000 dollars more than the amount asked for by the Secretary of Defence (Mr James Forrestal), who sought an air force of only 66 groups.
