SIZE OF AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT
INCREASE APPROVED BY LOWER HOUSE
(Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 30. The Federal House of Representatives rejected by 32 votes to 25 a move by Sir Earle Page for a referendum before the size of the Federal Parliament is enlarged. The Attorney-General (Dr. H. V. Evatt) said that the argument for a referendum should not be used to delay the present bills, although it might merit the attention of a constitutional convention. The House passed through all stages two * bills, one of which increases the membership of the Senate from 36 to 60, and of the House of Representatives from 75 to 121. The other introduces proportional representation for the election of senators.
