CORONER RESIGNS

LONG SERVICE BY MR C. W. WOOD

Mr C. W. Wood has resigned from the position of Coroner at Timaru as from the end of last month, after a period of 10$ years’ service. His successor is Mr M. M. Enting. Several tributes have been paid to Mr Wood’s work by those associated with him. “On behalf of members 'of the police, and personally. I wish to offer you congratulations on the manner in which you have carried out the duties pertaining to the office over the long period of service as Coroner, said Inspector D. L.« Calwell, of the Timaru Police Station, in a letter to Mr Wood. “Your courtesy to officials and public’ alike has been sincerely appreciated,” said Mr D. C. Webster (Clerk of the Court at Timaru). At a recent meeting of the South Canterbury Justices' Association a resolution was passed thanking Mr Wood for the manner in which he had fulfilled the office. He had reflected credit on himself with his sympathetic handling of cases and the sound judgment he had always exercised, it was stated, and he had upheld the dignity and prestige of the Justices of South Canterbury district. Mr Enting, who has been a justice of the peace for 19 years, is a member of the firm of Enting and Enting, sharebrokers, Timaru. and was educated at Waipawa District High School. In November he was elected to the South Canterbury Electric Power Board.

General Spaatz to Retire.— An application by General Carl Spaatz to retire as Chief of Staff of the United States Army Air Force has been accepted by President Truman. The President has nominated General Hoyt Vandenberg to succeed hifcn. General Spaatz had planned to retire some time ago, but he stayed in his post to assist in the unification of the armed services.—Washington, April 2.

Illegal Possession of Narcotics.— Eugene Markey, a New’ Zealandborn labour organiser, was to-day sentenced to nine'months’ imprisonment and fined 200 dollars for illegal possession of narcotics. The judge said that his sentence would be served concurrently with one imposed yesterday in St. John’s, Quebec. —Montreal, April 2.
