FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM

RACING

SIGNAL OFFICER’S TRIUMPH

FRANCES AND DESERT GIRL WIN AGAIN From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, March 21. Signal Officer ran probably the greatest race of his career when he mastered 9-12 to win the President’s Handicap decisively at Trentham on Saturday. It was a meritorious performance and as soon as it was apparent that he would win the crowd oegan to applaud the gallant little gelding. He completed a double for the meeting and received an enthusiastic reception as he returned to scale. South Island horses again had a very successful day, as in addition to Signal Officer, Maryburn, Desert Girl, and Frances were successful. All registered fine performances and the last two named aiso completed doubles for the meeting. The meeting was held in fine weather and the track was fast. There was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £188,019 compared with £179452 on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £379,276- compared with £351,427 IDs last year, an increase Of £27,848 10s.' Signal Officer scored his sixth success for the season when he won the President’s Handicap and he brought his total stake winnings to £17,115. He ran his usual type of race, being near the rear of the field until the half-mile where he started to improve his position. He was handier to the leaders than usual entering the straight and was going so well that he reached the front with a furlong and a half to run and carried on to beat Indian Dawn by a little more than a length. Indian Dawn c6me home well after having to change her line in the straight, but had np chance with the winner. Gay Fault was a good third. From the start Master Baron soon pulled his way to the front and led from Voltaic and Embrolita with Barrage, Yasda, and Langue d’Qr next, Signal Officer being at the rear with Gay Fault and Beau Raide. Master Baron led Voltaic by five lengths at the seven furlongs, but was joined by Catterick Bridge at the six furlongs, where Embroiita had drifted. Passing the half-mile Signal Of-, ficer and Indian Dawn had started to improve their positions and at the three furlongs Catterick Bridge was clear of Barrage. Yasda, and Voltaic with Langue d'Or, Signal Officer, and Indian Dawn next and Gay Fault also coming into the picture. Except that the last three named had closed on the leaders there was little change to the straight, but once they straightened up, Signal Officer soon forged his way to the front to lead at the furlong from Indian Dawn, Barrage, Gay Fault, Yasda, and Langue d’Or. Though Indian Dawn finished strongly. Signal Officer always had the race in safe keeping and was going the better at the post. Gay Fault finished solidly into third place, while Yasda, beat his stablemate Langue d’Or for fourth place in a photo-finish. Desert Fox was next, followed by Barrage, Catterick Bridge, and Embrolita.

St. Leger Stakes There was a great finish in the St. Leger Stakes. Kartikeya and Foxbay having a stirring struggle jpver the last furlong and a half, with Foxbay getting the decision by half a head in a photo-finish. Lady Vite was five lengths back in third place. Kartikeya was a little unlucky, as he missed the jump out, and his saddle slipped after he had covered four furlongs, with the result that he pulled his way to the front much too soon. There was no pace on early, Atomic Energy and Angell being the leaders. Going to the nine furlongs Kartikeya moved up from the rear, and at the seven furlongs was a length behind Atomic Energy. Going to the half-mile the latter was joined by Kartikeya, and they led by two lengths from Angell, with a length to Meteorina and the same to Foxbay and Magnaform. Round the home tutn Foxbay moved up to be a length behind Kartikeya entering the straight. Foxbay headed Kartikeya approaching the distance, but the latter fought back stride for stride, and in. a hard finish Foxbay just held the advantage at the post. There was a gap to Lady Vi|e, which did best of the others, with Magnaform a poor fourth and the others well beaten.

After Citril had looked the winner approaching the final furlong, Desert Girl finished brilliantly in the Suburban Handicap to win going away by half a length. Fleetwood again finished well to be another length away, third. Deprive caught the barrier, and Zelander and Citril got the best of the start from The Pagan The latter soon joined Citril, and the pair led past the half-mile from Cot-Case, Zealander,' Deprive, and Fleetwood next, and a gap to Desert Girl. Except that the latter had made up a little ground, there was little change to the straight. Citril worked clear of The Pagan early In the run home and led at - the furlong from Desert Girl and Fleetwood. Nearing the post Citril weakened a , little, and Desert Girl maintained her brilliant finishing run to win decisively. Fleetwood was a good third, clear of The Papan, which was followed by Dyihondy, Mr Valiant, Cot-Case, and Deprive, which were well beaten.

Frances gave further indication of her class when very solidly under a hard ride over the last two furlongs to win the Hutt Handicap by a length from Wild Note, with a length and a half to Cressida, which beat Mesalliance for third in a photo-finish. Marilyn, Ladyship, Lord Theio, and Revolte were slowest to move, Wild Note, Irish Note, Cressida, and Frances showing out early from Foxella, Lady Delight, and Audacious. At the half-mile Wild Note and Cressida were closely followed by Frances and Irish Note, with Foxella, Ladyship, and MesaU Hance most prominent of the others. Wild Note held his lead to the straight, where Frances, Irish Note, Mesalliance, Cressida, and Ladyship were his nearest attendants. Frances challenged Wild Note early in the run home, and the pair settled down to a hard struggle, with Frances gradually gaining the upper hand over the last three-quarters of a furlong. Cressida and Mesalliance had a similar struggle over the last furlong for third place, with the former shading Mesalliance in the last few strides. Revolte was finishing on in fifth place, with Morotai, Lady Delight, and The Stormovlk next.

GRAND NATIONAL

SHEILA’S COTTAGE WINS FAVOURITE falls at BEECHER’S BRbOK (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 11 pjp.) LONDON, March 20. The Liverpool Grand National was won by Sheila’s Cottage by a length from First of the Dandies, with Cromwell six lengths away third. Only 14 of 43 runners finished. The favourite, Silver Fame, fell at Beecher's Brook on the first circuit. The time for the race was 9min 24 4-ssec. Sheila’s Cottage is the first mare to win the Grand National since 1902. She is by Cottage from Sheila, and is owned by Mr F. J. Procter; who bought her for £3500 last October. Mr Procter said that the mare wouldn’t race again and would go to the stud. , The crowd was a record. Hundreds of racegoers cajne by aircraft from many parts of England and the Continent.

MARYBURN WINS IMPRESSIVELY

SOUND STAYING FORM AT TRENTHAM

The Riccarton-trained 'Maryburn left no doubts about his staying ability when he led all the way to <vin the Champion Hack Handicap decisively at Trentham on Saturday. Jn practically a walk-in start, Maryburn began smartly and was quickly in front. He began to pull, and with none of the others willing to make the pace, his rider, C. McDonald, had no option but to run along in front. It proved no easy task lor McDonald, as Maryburn started to hang turning out pf the straight, and continued to do so ail the way to the straight entrance, where he ran a little wide. However, once he straightened up for the run home, Maryburn galloped very truly and outstayed his opponents to win comfortably. It was Maryburn’s second success since Mr D. McFarlane purchased him for 750 guineas last month, and his two wins and a third placing for his present owner have returned £895 in stakes. Maryburn has now won his way out of hack company. He has hack engagements to run out at the Easter meeting at Riccarton, and is also engaged in the Great Autumn Handicap. His performance last Saturday was very impressive, and he looks like being a good winner in open company. In the early stages of the race, Maryburn was followed by Torrent and Mine Host, with Master Fox, Kelmont, and Culloden Moor in the next bunch. At the seven furlongs Maryburn was a length and a half clear of Mine Host, but going to the half-mile he was joined by Minion. The latter soon dropped out and Maryburn led into the straight from Torrent. Culloden Moor, Flirtatious, Minion, Night Charm, and Bobby Dazzler. In the run home, Maryburn was always going too well for Torrent, and he won very easily. Bobby Dazzler made a well sustained run to catch Torrent 100 yards from the post, and beat her by two lengths. He appeared to squeeze Torrent upon the rails as he drew up to her, but it is doubtful if that made any difference to the result. The rest were headed by Culloden Moor and Mine Host. Winner Fails To Draw Weight Glad Fox scored a very easy win in the Ngaio Hurdles, but his supporters suffered a reverse when his rider, W. Taylor, failed to draw the weight through losing his skull cap early in the race, and the judicial stewards had no QPtioh but to diSQUalliy Glad Fox under rule 2<2 (3). The runner-up, Rondelle, was placed first, Grand Central second, and Rockanui third. Rondelle was the early pacemaker from Rockanui, Grand Central, and Gynerio. .At the end of six furlongs, Glad Fox started to improve his position, and at -the mile Rondelle led Rockanui by a length with three lengths to Glad Fox and Grand Central. Rockanui joined Rondelle a little further on. but was displaced by Glad Fox round the home turn., and Glad Fox was shading Rondelle into the straight with three lengths to Rockanui and Grand Central. Once over the last fence Glad Fox soon drew well clear and carried on to beat Rondelle by five lengths, with four lengths to Grand Central. Rockanui weakened - into fourth place and was followed by Merger and Gunther. Kami Te Pai tailed off early and was pullfi i up some distance from home. He was very lame on returning to the birdcagr. Sailor Bov dipped badly at the first hurdle and lost his rider, and Gynerio fell Hi the second last hurdle, breaking a hind leg. Ran on Strongly

Lord A sure, a failure in the Plunket Nursery Handicap on the first day at Trentham, showed his true form on Saturday when he ran on strongly to win the Pacific Handicap comfortably after taking the lead with a furlong and a half to run. Pitoitoi ran a grand race under 9-1 J to hold off Brenlock by half a head for second. Goldsmith, Haukoti, and Memento were slowest away. Air Belle began brilliantly and was soon in front, leading down on to the course proper from Royal Shar, Lord / Azure, Bolivar, Buchanan, Pitoitoi, and Brenlock. Air Belle led into the straight but gave up early in the run home and Lord Azure took charge and at the furlong led from Royal Shar, Pitoitoi, Air Belle, Brenlock. Buchanan, Bolivar, and Leyma. Nothing had a chance with Lord Azure, which won unchallenged, but Brenlock just failed to get up to beat Pitoitoi for second. Fighting Fox finished on into fourth plaoce and was followed by Leyma, Royal Shar, Bolivar, Jaconet, Air Belle, Irresistible, and Buchanan, which had ng chance two furlongs from home. Demonstration Against Grill

A section of the crowd staged a hostile demonstration against Grill after his easy win in the Gardiner Memorial Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday. In a fourhorse race Grill trailed Wild Ribbon, Tweedside, and Siegform in the early stages. At the far turn the field was closely bunched and Grill moved up smartly to lead into the straight and run home an easy winner. The protest flag was raised, but after hearing the evidence of the owner, who attributed the difference in running to a change of jockeys and the state of the track, the committee decided to accept the explanation and no action was taken. Brilliant Finishing Run

Diana Reynard finished brilliantly over the last furlong in the Belmont Hack Handicap and proved too solid for Bay Fort, which led until the last 60 yards when he commenced to weaken. Fair-’ home, Colorado Maid, Diana Reynard, and Sergeant Jack were slow away. Garry, Bay Fort, and Oban were first out from Sly Gold and Lord Holland. These horses formed the leading division round the home turn, where The Missioner had moved up on. the outside of Garry, Bay Fort, and Oban, and they were followed into the straight by Lord Holland, Sty Gold, and Digna Reynard. As soon as the field straightened up Bay Fort drew clear and at the furlong led from Lord Holland, Oban, and. Diana Reynard. In the last half-furlong Bay Fort started to weaken under pressure and Diana Reynard finishing very solidly came on to win going - away by a length. Lord Holland was only a neck behind Bay Fori, with Diameter making a belated appearance to get up for fourth. Sly Gold, Sergeant Jack, and Beechwood were next to finish. Riccarton Rehandicaps

OHINEMURI CLUB

PAEROA CUP TO SWANNEE

(PA.) AUCKLAND, March 21. The Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s autumn meeting concluded at Paeroa yesterday in fine weather, and the going was good. The totalisator handled £74,932 10s. compared with £64,234 last year, an increase of £10,696 10s, and a record for Paeroa. The total for the two days was £137,947 10s, as against £129,101 last year, an increase of £8846 10s. t

After the running of the Members’ Steeplechase, the judicial committee met to consider a charge by W. Skif&ngton, the rider of Bold Tide, that he had been subject to interference at several fences during the race by J. Winder, the rider of Killcommon. The committee found that there was insufficient evidence to sustain the charge, and decided to take no action. R. Collett, the rider of Neenah in the Waitekauri Hurdles, was advised by the acting-stipendiary steward, Mr W. Ryan, to use more vigour in the future. F. W. Edlin. the rider of Beaute, which finished second in the Electric Handicap, weighed in 41b light, and the mare was disqualified. It was found that 41b of lead had slipped through the lead bag. As it had appeared to be in good order and condition, no blame was attachable to anyone. * Results:— WAITEKAURI HURDLES, of £350; about one mile and five furlongs.—l, 1 KANUI TE KOA 9-12 W. O. FRESH BOY WINS AT RAND WICK

(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 21. By his win in the Chipping Norton 1 Stakes at Randwick yesterday. Fresh Boy established a claim as the outstanding Sydney Cup contender. He fought out the race finish with the other three-year-old. Valiant Crown, and though considered fresh in condition, won in a photo finish. Valiant Crown set a fast pace and cleared away to a six lengths’ lead at the five furlongs, but Fresh Boy was always handy. The odds-on favourite* Columnist, ran the worst race of his career, finishing last after being pocketed in the early stages. Hiraji was headed out of a place. The veteran Murray Stream caused another surprise when he defeated a classy field in the Liverpool Handicap. Money Moon failed badly, and ran into seventh place after leading into the straight.
