COMMUNISTS IN IRAQ

SUBVERSIVE LITERATURE DISTRIBUTED

«MOSCOW HAD BIG HAND IN WORK ”

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 27. Communists had been very active : n Iraq, but the Government was clamping down on them, said Mr J. P. Fish, former security officer with the Iraq Petroleum Company, whan he arrived at Auckland by a Tasman Airways Skymaster on Saturday. Distribution of’ seditious literature, chiefly among Iraqis working for foreign oil companies, was the main activity of the Communists, Mr Fish said, and he was certain from investigations he had made that Moscow had a big hand in the work. Penalties imposed on subversive Communists were severe, said Mr Fish. Recently the leader of the Communists in Iraq was arrested and sentenced to death. The sentence, however, was commuted to life imprisonment.
