OBITUARY
LIEUTENANT-COLONEL N. F. SHEPHERD The death has occurred in England of Lieutenant-Colonel N. F. Shepherd, D.S.O. He gave distinguished service i’ World War I, when he served in the Ist N.Z.E.F., and in World War 11, as a staff officer in the British Army.
Lieutenant-Colonel Shepherd was aged 59. He was bom and educated at Reefton, and had. been a commissioned officer for nearly 40 years. He was a son of the late Mr end Mrs G. B. Shepherd, who were pioneer residents of Reefton. Lieutenant-Colonel Shepherd enlisted in 1914 and left New Zealand as a second-lieutenant with the Canterbury Battalion Main Body, Ist N.Z.E.F. He was at the Gallipoli landing, and later served in France with the division. He received the D.S.O. and was promoted k- LieutenantColonel. In 1919 he was seconded fur service with the •Indian Army and served in India for a number of years. In 1938 he re-enlisted in the British Army and saw service in France. As a staff officer ne took part in the evacuation from Dunkirk, and was later stationed in England. He visited relatives in New Zealand a Aw month* ago On sick leave, accompanied by Mr# Shepherd. Lieutenant-Colonel Shepherd is survived by his widow, who lives in England, two brothers, Messrs George and Douglas Shepherd, and < ne sister, Miss Helen Shepherd, of Reefton. ' MR H. R.
