AUCKLAND TRADES COUNCIL

COMMUNIST OPPOSED FOR PRESIDENCY CPA.) AUCKLAND, March 17. _ The president of the Auckland Trades Council (Mr A. Drennan), who is chairman of the New Zealand Communist Party, will be opposed at the annual election of * executive officers on April 15 by Mr J. Freeman, vicepresident of the New Zealand Timber workers’ Union and of the Auckland branch.

The secretary of the Auckland Timber Workers’ Union (Mr F. Craig) said to-day that Mr Freeman was commended for his recent stand against Communist influence in the trade union movement in New Zealand at a well attended genera] meeting of the union. Mr Freeman was the Labour Party candidate against Mr R. M. Algie, M.P., in the Remuera electorate in the 1946 General Election.

Mr Drennan is vice-president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ umon and of the Auckland branch ana is the Auckland member of the national council of the Federation of Labour.
