PROPOSAL FOR SPECIAL SESSION
EXISTING LAW HELD ADEQUATE
The existing law was quite strong enough to deal with any situation that might arise without the need to call a special session of Parliament, said the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser), commenting yesterday on a suggestion by the. Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland). An immediate session had been urged by Mr Holland so that special legislation might be drawn up to deal with subversive activities, including Communism. Claiming that the existing laws were strong enough to deal with such problems, Mr Fraser added that in the meantime it was evident that most trade unionists were by naw awakened to, and alarmed at, the danger of Communist or “fellow-traveller” control of the unions. Steps were being taken all over the country to “counteract that baneful influence.”
