Miss Ngaio Marsh has been re-elect-ed president of the Canterbury University College Drama Society for 1948. The plans of the society include the presentation of Allen Curnow’s “The Axe” in April. Sartre’s “The Flies” and Toller’s “Masses and Man” may be presented later during the year.

The garden circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club recently held its monthly meeting. Mrs A. E. G. Lyttle presided. The guest speaker the Rev. Father J. Taylor, who gave an instructive talk on the cultivation of dahlias. Winners of the competitions for dahlias were as follows:—Miss A. M. Black. Miss D. E. Lane, Mrs J. W. H. Francis, Miss R. Stewart, Mrs L. P. Longuet; decorative class, jug of fuchsias, Miss A. M. Black 1, Mrs J. W. H. Francis 2, Mrs L. P. Longuet 3: small bowl of flowers. MrsA. M. Bishop 1, Mrs T. Mrs H. S. S. Kyle presided at the monthly meeting of the Riccarton subbranch of the Plunket Society. Nurse E. M. Simpson reported that she had attended at Puriri street rooms eight whole days and at the mobile unit, Church Corner, four half days. Visitors ta Puriri street, 152 babies, 152 adults; visitors to mobile unit, 36 babies, 38 adults, three pre-school children; visits paid to homes, 110; new cases for the month, 16.

Mrs Pearl Allan Bennett and Mrs Alma Schumacher have been nomintted to fill the vacancy on the Christchurch Technical Colleges Board of Governors daused by the death of Mrs D. M. Opie.

Miss Kathleen M. Armlstead, M.A., president of the English National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, has been appointed as one of the five representatives of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women to attend the conference in May at Geneva of nongovernmental organisations ip the Division of Co-oraination and Liaison of the United Nations. The International Federation is one of the eight organisations that have been given consultative status with the United Nations Organisation. Miss Armistead has for some years held the position of assistant to the Director of the Leeds City Art Gallery, Temple Newsam. Members of the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society gathered in great force at a 5 o’clock party given at the A.A.C. rooms, Worcester street, yesterday, in honour of Mr Frederick Farley, who arrived in New Zealand from England last week, to take up the post of producer for the society. On behalf of members, Mr G. S. Salter wel-. cpmed Mr Farley to Christchurch and wished, him success and happiness in his new undertaking. Mr Salter also expressed pleasure at the presence <rf several West End Players, who are at present appearing in comedy in the city, and who were greeted with warmth by members of the society.
