PROGRESS IN LAST TEN YEARS

Figures illustrating the development of Te Wai Pounamu College in the last 10 years were presented at the March meeting of the College Council, held this week. _ . , x , The report said: “In 1937-38 the total income from all sources, including B ar “ den parties, pound days, etc., was £611; land, buildings, and furniture were valued at £2OOO. In 1947-48 fees alone amounted to £1542 which, with grants (£250) and donations (£135) brought the income in the general account to £1927. In addition bequests and donations to the development fund totalled £1328, making in all £3353 for the year. Land, buildings, and furniture, etc., are valued at £10..552. “Work on the new wing was started in January, 1944, and in the four years that have elapsed the sum of £9OOO has been spent on buildings alone. With the exception'of an amount of £l4OO (balance of a £2OOO loan to be paid for in a 10 year period) all the work has been paid for. “By the end of the 1937-38 year, six of the present principal’s pupils had taken up a teaching career. In the eight years since 1940 the number of girls who have left to enter the teaching or nursing professions total 36 eight nursing and 28 teaching. To-day, at the commencement of the fortieth year of the existence of the school, the roll stands at 40, which is higher than it has ever been and exactly four times its total when Mrs Daniels was appointed principal. It is through her work that Te Wai Pounamu is now a registered secondary school whose reputation is steadily growing and bringing applications for enrolment from parents of girls all over New Zealand, including the north of the North Island.”

At the meeting tributes were paid to members of former councils for the work they had done during the very difficult years qf the depression,, and to the honorary registrar, Mr John Stewart, for his work since he joined the council 10 years ago.
