TROPICAL HURRICANE NEARING N.Z.

MAY PASS NORTH OF AUCKLAND TO-DAY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 15. Radio stations at Noumea and Tontouta, in New Caledonia, have not been in contact with New Zealand since a hurricane swept the island on Sunday. A message received from Tontouta late that morning said that hurricane conditions were ruling with gusts up to 85 miles an hour and with barometric pressure at 28.75 in. “Our aerials may be blown away soon,” the message concluded. The Noumea radio was off the air at noon, and Tontouta about 1.30 p.m. Transmission had not been resumed tonight. The hurricane was formed in a tropical low pressure area which during the last week has moved southward from the New Hebrides. Since Sunday it has moved away from New Caledonia mi a south-easterly direction, and to-night it was several hundred

east of Norfolk Island. If it follows its present track and maintains its speed the cyclone should pass about 250 miles to the north-east of Auckland about noon to-day. »
