EMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA
PLAN TO COME BEFORE BRITISH CABINET
LONDON, March 5. The proposal by the Australian Minister of Immigration (Mr A. A. Calwell) for the mass emigration of millions of Britons to Australia will come before the British Cabinet soon. Official circles would not comment on the proposal, but the official policy on emigration indicates clearly that, in the interests of the Empire, efforts will be made to assist emigration to the Dominions.
The political correspondent of the “Daily Herald” says that the British Government does not share the Dominions’ view that millions of British people should be shifted to British countries overseas. It is the British view that for some time to come Britain will need all the workers she can obtain. Displaced persons are being brought into the country with this object.
DR. DALTON’S VIEWS (Rec. 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, March <.6. The former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Dr. Hugh Dalton, in a speech at Cambridge, said: “Although it is not a quick solution to our ecomonic ills, we have got to plan with Australia and New Zealand some scheme whereby we shall get a more sensible distribution of population over that area.” <
