MAN DIES WHILE SAWING WOOD
FORMER ADJUTANT OF HOME GUARD
Collapsing while sawing wood in a plantation at Winslow on Saturday afternoon. John Laurence Lovell Smith, aged 56, single, died before he reached medical aid at Ashburton. He resided with his sister, Mrs F. A. McKenzie, 36 Cameron street, Ashburton, and was a returned soldier of the war of 1914-18. He was Adjutant of the Ashburton Home Guard for about three years.
An inquest was opened by the Coroner (Mr E. C. Bathurst), arid was adjourned after evidence of identification had been given by John Clifford Attwood.
