CURRENT NOTES

Her Excellency Lady Freyberg will be the guest of honour at an “at home,” to be given at the Otago Women’s Club, Dunedin, on Wednesday.

Mrs E. M. Johnston, founder and director of the New Zealanders’ and Descendants of Pioneers’ Club, was the guest of honour at an evening social given by members of the club on Saturday. Mrs Johnston gave a talk on the aims and objects of the club, which is non-sectarian and non-poli-tical. She made special mention of the club motto: “Love, peace, harmony, Be Loyal and Worthy of Our Heritage.’’ Mrs Johnston was presented with a bouquet, and the president, Mrs A. M. Chalmers, received the guests. A programme, arranged by Mrs Hilda Reeves, who was accompanist, was presented by Eva Fulton, N. A. Butcher, Claude O’Hagan, Ernest Douglas, John Palmer (songs). Mrs Tulle and G. Maddams (recitations), Mrs E. Douglass. Mr Maddams (violin solos), and Mr R. Katene (piano solo). During a six months’ tour of Australia she had travelled over 16,000 miles by air, visited 62 towns, and given 32 broadcasts and 235 speeches, said Lady Baden-Powell during a broadcast talk last evening. She had also seen a large percentage of the 25,000 guides on that continent, she said.

Miss Cara Hall, who returned to New Zealand recently after continuing her study of piano playing in London, arrived in Christchurch yesterday to make arrangements for giving concerts in schools in the city. Miss Hall was born and received her early musical education in Christchurch, and has now been engaged by the Education Department to further the study of music in schools. She will begin giving concerts in North Island schools after Easter.

Many of the recent arrivals from Britain were the guests of honour at an evening gathering arranged by the British War Wives’ Club, and held at the Empire Society’s rooms, Cathedral square. Mrs J. Walton (president) welcomed the guests and invited them to attend any meeting', of members, who would always be pleased to meet them. At the meeting contacts were established for all the guests with hostesses in private homes and the club will continue to make arrangements for the new arrivals to visit the homes of members and their friends. Miss Betty Lorimer, the guest speaker at a well-attended meeting of the Federation of Congregational Women, gave a talk on her work with the Young Women’s Christian Association in Cairo, Iraq, and Burma. The president (Mrs Wilson) presided, and Mrs Sturge won the competition for the best arranged floating bowl. Mrs Yearn, who will leave Christchurch soon for England, was entertained by the West of England Women’s Association and presented with a cheque.

The Dominion president of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers (Mrs William Elliott, Clarendon), the four Dominion vice-presidents— Mesdames A. Blackmore, Mclntosh, Lamplough, and Haldane—the Dominion secretary (Mrs A. B. Smith), and the Dominion treasurer (Mrs H. J. McLeavey) were present on Saturday at the official opening of “Scotland,” the division’s new rest home in Auckland, and the first to be established in the Auckland Province. The house, which will accommodate 10 guests, is situated amid lawns and trees in the grounds, and there are also some interesting caves which have been visited by geologists. The house has been attractively furnished and some beautiful gifts of furniture have been received. The lounge is in rust and beige, and. the bedrooms in pastel tonings. The dining room opens by french doors on to‘ a balcony.

Give the children "HOLLY” Oatmeal. The new pre-cooked process gives a nutty flavoured breakfast. Cooks in two minutes—easier and quicker to prepare. Ask for Buchanan’s “HOLLY” Oatmeal. Advt.
