WOMEN ARTISTS
WORK EXHIBITED IN DUNEDIN
At the centennial exhibition of Otago art, now being held in Dunedin, four women artists well know in New Zealand are represented. One is Frances Hodgkins, who won success overseas and whose death occurred recently. She was first taught painting by her father, a Dunedin lawyer and an amateur artist. At the age of 30 she began studies abroad, with headquarters in Paris, and in 1913 she revisited New Zealand and held an exhibition of her pictures.
Miss Jenny Wimperis. three of whose pictures are hung, was also the daughter of a Dunedin lawyer. She studied art in Chester. Munich, and Belgium.. Miss Grace Joel, whose work reached a high standard, was born in Dunedin in 1865 and studied in Melbourne. later going to the Academic Julien in Paris. She was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy and Paris salon.
Another artist whose work is represented at the exhibition is Miss Kathleen Salmond, who was well known in Dunedin. She was the daughter of Mr J. L. Salmond, and studied at the Dunedin School of Art under A. H. O'Keeffe and later at the Slade School. She painted in oils and Water colours and developed a rich colour sense.
