AT MOTUKARARA

RACING

MESTIZA SURPRISES IN HANDICAP

REVOLTE WINS NARROWLY IN SPRINT

A brilliant late run by an outsider, Mestiza, brought about the downfall of the favourite. Thornbridge, in the Peninsula Handicap, the principal event at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting at Motukarara on Saturday. In a pa.licularly close finish, Mestiza beat Thombridge by a head, with the third horse, Faithful Pal, a similar margin away in third place. Good racing was seen throughout the day, and six of the favourites on the win machine were successful. The only one of their numbereto finish out of a place was Helio, in the opening event, the Bradley Stakes. The meeting was held in fine, sunny ■weather and the track was in good order. There was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £35,270, compared with £40,537 10s last year. In view of the counter attractions on the day, the turnover was good.

After being well back in the running for the greater part of the journey, Mestiza only entered the issue in the last 60 yards in the Peninsula Handicap, and it was only in the last 30 yards that she gained the upper hand of the favourite. Thornbridge, which in turn had only just gained the measure of Faithful Pal. Mestiza was well handled by the promising apprentice rider, D. F. Cooftibe, who is attached to E. J. Ellis’s stable at Washdyke. He must be given full credit for riding a very patient race. Thombridge was, however, a little unlucky, as he received two checks in the running and was not too well placed turning into the straight. Faithful Pal, on the other hand, was well placed throughout. In the early rush for pc sitions. Faithful Pal, Desert Victory, and Authentic fared best. Thornbridge receiving a bad check at the end of a furlong. Desert Victory led round to the back straight from Authentic, Faithful Pal, and Wild Ribbon, with Pandemonium, Silver Link, Tweedside, and Thornbridge next, and Mestiza, Nightchild, and Bitter Sweet at the rear. Authentic headed off Desert Victory passing the six furlongs and at the five was joined by Wild Ribbon. They were folowed by Pandemonium and Faithful Pal. with Desert Victory, Bitter Sweet, and Thornbridge, which had received another check, next. Except that Silver Link had Improved his position round the home turn and Thornbridge had worked up a little on the fence, there was little change to fhe straight. Authentic was first to weaken and Wild Ribbon was soon challenged by Faithful Pal. with Thombridge and Silver Link becoming prominent. At the furlong Thornbridge had ranged up on the outside of the leaders. Wild Ribbon weakened and with 100 yards to run Thombridge was doing a little better than Faithful Pal, when Mestiza came with a late run to push through between them and gain a head decision in the last few strides. Faithful Pal was a good third, wita Wild Ribbon two lengths back in fourth place. Then came Authentic. Tweedside, Silver Link, Pandemonium, Bittersweet, Desert Victory, and Nightchild.

Revolte recorded a good trial for his engagement in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham when he won by half a head from Palomino in the Kinloch Handicap efter the pair had had a keen struggle over the last furlong. After making a promising move approaching the straight entrance, Kirkella weakened into third place. Flying Orders was soon setting the pace from John Gay and Palomino, with Revolte and Kirkella following, and Wild Ribbon at the rear John Gay dropped back at the end of a furlong and a half.. and at the half-mile Flying Orders led Palomino by half a length, with three lengths to Revolte and Kirkella. The last two named closed on the leaders coming to the straight. Palomino and Kirkella soon challenged Flying Orders and Revolte came through on the inside to join in the issue. At the furlong Revolte and Palomino were doing better than Kirkella, and in a hard finish Revolte was doing a shade the better in the last few strides. Kirkella was three lengths back with half a length to Wild Ribbon in fourth place. There was a gap to Flying Oraers. John Gay’s saddle broke and he finished well m the rear*.

Two Riccarton trainers won doubles during the day. T. H. Gillett won with Mestiza and Great Victory, and A. Cutts with Wide Range and Grande Melee.

Spare Part’s Escapade A southern report during the week stated that Spare Part is to be put aside ■xor the remainder of the season. However. he has been nominated for the Great Autumn Handicap and other events at the Easter meeting at Riccarton. There was some excuse for Spare Part's poor showing in the. Otago Handicap last Saturday as he broke away from his attendant and galloped a mile and a half at Wingatui early on Saturday morning. In 13 starts during the season Spare Part won *’ ve « r^£ ee and was three times placed for £6830. Only a four-year-old now, the Salmagundi gelding has plenty of racing
