MEN REFUSE TO LEAVE MINE
COAL BOARD’S DECISION OPPOSED (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, February 10. Two hundred and ninety-two miners employed in the Wales wood pit, near Sheffield, are staging a stay-in strike as a protest against the decision of the North-Eastern Divisional Coal Board to close the pit. The men refused to leave the pit when the early morning shift was completed, and settled down to play cards and hold impromptu debates. A Coal Board official who went down the pit and pleaded with them to drop their protest returned after half an hour to report that the men were determined not to budge. The miners’ womenfolk are sending cooked meals down the pit. “ Waleswood was classified as uneconomic six months ago. The men’s reply to this was to beat the production target every week since the decision to close the workings was announced. They claim that there is still 18,000.000 tons of coal available.
