URANIUM FOUND IN S. AFRICA
MEASURES PLANNED FOR CONTROL
(Rec. 1.20 a.m.) CAPE TOWN, Jan. 16. The Governor-General of South Africa (Major G. B. Van Zyl) announced in his speech at the opening of the Union Parliament that considerable quantities of uranium had been discovered in the Union. The Government would submit a bill to control the exploitation and disposal of “this potentially dangerous commodity.” Major Van Zyl also said that South Africa had occupied the Prince Edward group of islands, 1400 miles south-east of Cape Town, to safeguard southern communications and establish meteorological stations.
