FLAME GOOD PROSPECTS IN TWO RACES AT BLENHEIM Flame, one of the fastest maiden trotters in commission, may top off her list of minor placings with a win in the Seddon Handicap and in the President’s Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting at Blenheim next week. Flame was educated and trained for her early races by J. Wilson at Rakaia, and, at her first start as a three-year-old in the 1945-46 season, she attracted attention to her prospects by finishing second to her stable-mate, Acclamation, in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan . Trotting Club’s meeting on April 6, 1946. Two unplaced efforts followed, and at her only start in the following season Flame finished third to Sandy Duval and Beverley Volo in the Addington Trotting Stakes at the national meeting at Addington on August 31. Wilson then gave Flame a long spell and she started the present term with an outstanding effort to beat all but Acclamation in the Addington Trotting Stakes in the fast time of 3min 35 2-ssec at Addington on August 30. Acclamation, which conceded Flame 24 yards start, won in 3min 33sec, which was three-fifths of a second faster than Rerewaka was required to go to win the August Trotting .Free-for-All for the best class trotters later in the afterrtoon. Flame was then taken to the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting on October 4 where, after attempting to lead all the way, she was beaten by a head by Laureate in the first division of the Drayton Trot Handicap. A trip to the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on October 11 followed, but Flame was not on her best behaviour at the start of the Bayfield Handicap and she was beaten into fifth place by Port Bowen, Great Worth, Song Bird, and Mack Sure after losing a lot of ground when she failed to strike her gait quickly. Her riext appearance was at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Labour Day where, after losing about 60 yards when she broke at the start, she finished third to Dame Durdin and Tatsydale in the Introductory Handicap. At her last start. Flame moved off smoothly but went to a break soon after the start of the Mitcham Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day. The mistake cost her more than 100 yards, and she appeared to be hopelessly placed at the end of half a mile. Once she settled down to do her best. Flame trotted faster than anything else in the race, and after being privately timed to cover her last mile in better than 2min Bsec, she finished third to Bellisima and Merry Man. On paper the fields at Blenheim appear weak and. if Wilson can persuade Flame to leave the mark correctly, she should not be troubled to win two races at the meeting. Jottings Gallant Girl should race well over the eight and a half furlongs journey in the Wairau Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting next week. The record entry of 156 yearlings has been received for the national yearling sales at Addington in March. Last year 97 yearlings were offered. Bellisima, which has been successful at her last three starts, will probably be sent out favourite for the Vauxhall Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting next week. Indian Ranee, the runner-up to Worthy ‘Nelson in the Primary Handicap at the Cambridge* Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, is a four-year-old mare by Indianapolis from a Native Prince mare Caudray may show up from the 12 yards mark in the King George Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Clubs meeting.

Won on the Course Red Hussar’s record of two wins and a second this season includes a fine effort to beat Free Fight by a neck in the Southland Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on October 11. One of the most promising pacers in his class. Red Hussar will probably be sent out favourite for the King George Handicap at the Forbury Park Club’s meeting next week.

Bred in Australia The four-year-old Australian-bred horse, Goldsmith, impressed good judges when he gave a sterling performance to win the Improvers’ Handicap by a length from Hopeful at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. A well-built son of Robert Derby and Lowlawn, Goldsmith, which is trained at Takanini by F. J. Smith, is expected to take a tight mark in New Zealand. Placed in Melbourne Castellan, which was bought by Mr H. Abrahams, Melbourne, at the yearling sales at Addington in April, finished second in a race for two-year-olds in Melbourne recently. A bay colt. Castellan, which was bred at Winchester by Mrs T. H. Gunning, is by Dillon Hall from Christmas Rose, by Travis Axworthy from Rosethorne, by Great Audubon from Sadie Dillon.

In G. H. Murfitt’s Team King High is notv being trained at Rangiora by G. H. Murfitt. A fast pacer. King High gained four minor placings last season, and if he settles down to race solidly he may make the grade to good company. A well-bred gelding. King High, which was bred by B. Dooley, Amberley, is by Calumet Axworth from Queen’s Up, by Jack Potts from Alone, by Wildwood Jun. from Navaho, by Rothschild from a Perkin Warbeck mare.

Easy Win Ridden by the galloping jockey, R. A. Gibson, Lucky Fellow gave a fine performance when he registered an easy win in the Poolburn Handicap, a mile saddle event at the Vincent Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. Trained at Gore by his owner, L. L. Abernethy, who has been successful this season with Aberhall. Lucky Fellow is by Lucky Jack from the Rey de Oro mare. Reyden. in Form

Imperial Grattan’s five placings in his 11 starts this season include a win over Grattan Drive and Right Royal in the Victoria Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on November 1. A repetition of that form should find Imperial Grattan hard to beat from the 12 yards mark in the Dunedin Cup Handicap, the main event at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting next week. Out of a Winner

Mr S. J. Gudsell’s two-year-old colt, Maori Gold is in A. Holmes’s team at Yaldhurst. By the champion pacer. Gold Bar, Maori Gold is out of a winner in Krina, the dam of a family of winners including Rerekohua, Lady Spray. Air Spray, and Sprayman. Should Race Well

Indemnity, which has gained a win and two minor placings in his three starts this season, has been nominated for both the Forbury Park - and Marlborough Trotting Clubs’ meetings next week. A wellbred gelding by Dillon Hall from First Water, Indemnity has more speed than most in his class, and he should prove hard to beat wherever he races.
