TUSSOCK FIRES
Sir, —-Recently we have been exhorted over the radio to take great care with fires in the country, and to notify any scrub or forest fires. Why not tussock fires as well? I think this is as it should be. and many people do take precautions owing to these warnings; but here we have the other side of it. Last Friday night rain fell in North Canterbury, and in “The Press” of Saturday officers of the State Forest Service are reported as saying that “the damping effect would last for about a week.” Naturally, some townsfolk, with little experience of the dangers of fires in the country, on reading this would be inclined to relax their precautions when camping at the week-end. Anyone with any real knowledge of the facts would know that half an hour’s wind would be sufficient completely to nullify the damping effect of such light rain.— Yours, etc., S. M. DEANS. January 13, 1948.
