LABOUR FOR HARVEST
ACCOMMODATION PROBLEM There seemed to be plenty of unskilled labour, but not enough skilled labour available to meet harvesting demands in South Canterbury this summer, said the district employment officer at Timaru (Mr G. A. Plummer) yesterday. He added that the demand for harvesting labour had increased this year. Inquiries for harvesting work had reached his office from secondary schoolboys, students, school teacheis. and other seasonal workers. A difficulty faced by many farmers, however. was that of accommodation for their workers. There was plenty of labour available -in Timaru if the farmers were prepared to provide transport, said Mr Plummer. He had already had a few requests from farmers for harvesting labour, but he expected that the demand would reach its peak about the end of the month. Small seeds in South Canterbury have matured rapidly during the recent dry spell, and harvesting will begin at St. Andrews and in other districts this week if no further rain falls.
