AMERICAN AID TO EUROPE

SOCIALIST PARTIES TO CONFER BRITISH AND FRENCH AS SPONSORS <Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. January 12. The secretary of the Labour Party (Mr Morgan Phillips), after a meeting ©n Saturday of the committee of the International Socialist Conference, announced that the British Labour Party, with the French Socialist Party as joint sponsor, intended, to call a European congress of the Socialist parties of the Marshall Plan countries to meet in London on March 21 and 22. The German Social Democratic Party would be invited. The labour correspondent of “The Times’’ says: “The decision to call such a conference independently of the International Socialist Conference is an indication of a Continental desire to maintain contact between the eastern and western parties. The western parties could doubtless have secured the adoption of a motion for the Marshall Plan meeting, but to have done so would have caused the eastern representatives considerable embarrassment, and possibly forced them out of the conference altogether.”
