RETURN OF MISS B. LORIMER
WORK OVERSEAS Miss Betty Lorimer, deputy-director of the Y.W.C.A. women’s welfare services in Japan, has returned to New Zealand for an indefinite term, as‘her present position ceases when her leave expires. • Miss Lorimer has had seven years of interesting experiences, in the Middle East, India, Burma, and Japan. She was last in New Zealand two years ago. Miss Lorimer is staying with relatives in Dunedin. She will return to her home in Christchurch at the end of next week. In a recent interview, Miss Lorimer said that the occupation forces were popular in Japan. Some of the Japanese had never been so well off before as under the ordered employment of the occupation forces. Judging by the Japanese women’-; feelings, too, democracy was there to stay. The intelligent thinking Japanese today was fully conscious of Japan’s share of war guilt, added Miss Lorimer, referring more particularly to the Christian Japanese, who numbered 12 per cent, of the population. In the same way, they were most anxious for the preservation of peace, but were at a loss to know how to work for it.
