MR HOLLAND’S MESSAGE

Sir, — xour correspuuueiu iv±x Odgers, of Annat, does not appear to be included among the people of our country who are nappy and friendly. He says we rob Peter to pay Paul. I am not clear whom he means when he says “we.” He also says underdogs and over-dogs are vicious and unfriendly when empty. Well there is plenty of food in this country, so there should be no empty stomachs. He writes that I should forget the worldwide slump. As a matter of fact I did not mention slump in my letter, but if he wants to talk slump he is welcome to it as far as I am concerned. He also mentioned so-called freedom, I can tell him something about the freedom put over the wage-earners by some employers from 1890 to 1935, which consisted of constant pin-prick-ing and nigger-driving tactics.—Yours, etc., G. E. WRIGHT. January 10, 1948.

ASHBURTON HOSPITAL Sir, —As a visitor to the Ashburton Public Hospital during Christmas may I express my appreciation of the work done by the nursing staff to make the patients’ Christmas a happy one. The whole interior of the building was most beautifully and tastefully decorated with streamers, flowers, greenery, etc., and here and there a touch of humour further brightened the atmosphere, until the effect of the decorations and the spirits of the patients and staff gave one the impression that here one encountered a truly festive spirit. The lot of the patients could nave been rather dull or depressing on Christmas Day, and I would place credit with those of the staff who spent their time so unreservedly to make Christmas Day the happy and beautiful day it was there.—Yours, etc., HUSBAND. Ashburton, January 1, 1948.
