TWO CHIMNEY FIRES

Two calls to cnimney fires were received by the Christchurch Fire Brigade yesterday. The first, at 8.46 a.m., was to a house occupied by Mr James Beatty, at 269 Woodham road. The second was to a house occupied by Robert William Stapleforth, 103 St., Albans street, at 12.51 p.m. Both were extinguished without damage.

“Effects of British Emigration.—“l think the only hope - for the future lies in the organised dispersal of the population of Britain,” said Dr. Hugh Small, a Harley street surgeon, in an interview in Hastings. He held that emigration should be so arranged that emigrants represented a cross-section of the community, and not merely young and active persons, on whom

the authorities at present laid em- : phasis, so that problems in England : would not be intensified by the depletion of the young population. Emigrating only the young population would , further increase one of the most difficult medical problems confronting civilised countries at present—that of ’ geriatrics, the “medical servicing of old people.” —(P.A.)
