ESCAPED PRISONER SURRENDERS

(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, January U. As the result of appeals over tha radio by the State president of the Returned Soldiers’ League, Crofton Edward Barnes, aged 26, who broke out of Long Bay Gaol on New Year’* Day, has surrendered himseff. The league has asked for his examination by a psychiatrist, and will press for a commission of inquiry to review the sentence of six years’ imprisonment imposed on him for housebreaking. Barnes has a war record, and escaped from the Germans after having been made a prisoner of war. The Returned Soldiers’ League, if providing medical and legal help in an endeavour to ascertain whether bn is suffering from war neurosis.
