DOCKERS’ STRIKE AVERTED

NO EXTENSION OF WAGES DISPUTE / SYDNEY, January 10. The paralysis of Sydney's shipyards and docks was averted when the executive of the Sydney branch of tha Ships’ Painters’ and Dockers’ Union decided against an extension of the dispute over wages. The executive, however, endorsed the strike of about 250 members employed by the Union Steam Ship Company, which began last night, in support of wage demands. At ship repair yards in Melbourne, 700 members of the union went on strike yesterday. Repairs to the Antarctic research ship, Wyatt Earp, will probably be delayed by the strike. The strike in the Union Steam Ship Company’s yards will hold up repair and maintenance work on five overseas ships.
