DRAWN GAME AT TIMARU
AUCKLAND V. SOUTH CANTERBURY From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, December 30. Virtually giving all its men a turn at bowling, the Auckland Plunket Shield team drew with South Canterbury in a two-day fixture played on the Rectory ground, Timaru, in ideal conditions. When play began yesterday morning, with South Canterbury taking the crease first, it appeared as if the Aucklanders would completely overrun the home team. However, after dismissing Auckland for 486 runs at 3.25 to-day. South Canterbury batted with more heart than in its first innings, and had made 140 for the loss of five wickets at the close of play. In spite of frequent bowling changes, Auckland, batting vigorously, piled up the score. O. C. Cleal made 34 in as many minutes, including six boundaries. L. A. Kent and C. C. Burke, particularly the former, attacked the bowling, and 300 came up in 210 minutes, and 350 in 245 minutes. Auckland was six wickets down for 382 at the luncheon adjournment. Kent was then at 28 not out, and Burke at 18 not out Kent went out at 34, but Burke continued to score freely and retired when he reached 54. Snedden, the medium bowler, was still in when the last Auckland batsman. F. E. Hemmingson. was dismissed, knocking up a useful 41. N. H. Gould, the South Canterbury captain, returned the best bowling average of four wickets for 98 runs. South Canterbury began its second innings at 3.50 p.m., after the tea adjournment, with E. J. McEwen and R. Bowden as opening bats.
