YACHTING

AKAROA CLUB’S RACES Three races were held by the Akaroa Sailing Club over the Christmas period. On Boxing Day the race was won by the Kalua (D. Hammond), and on Sunday the Huia (W. Pool) won the club’s points race. The race on Saturday had to be abandoned as the Tikao buoy drifted from its moorings in the second round. The race on Sunday was sailed in a fresh westerly wind and was spectacular for the pace the yachts attained in some of the strong gusts of wind. The Huia covered the leg in the second round from Tikao buoy to Green Point buoy in the record time of 4Jmin. With spinnaker set she aquaplaned most of the distance. The Aloma also put up a great exhibition of speed when she approached the finishing line. With all sails set, the wind fairly lifted her out of the water. The crews in this race had an excitine afternoon’s sailing. Results were:—Huia. 3.46.40. 1: Aloma, 3.48.30, 2: Metro. 3.52.30, 3; Kalua, 3.52.40, 4; Zeta, 3.54.40, 5.
