50 MINUTES IN SEA
APPRENTICE FALLS OVERBOARD (P.A.) AUCKLAND, December 26. Falling overboard while painting a gangway lashed alongside the vessel Port Fremantle, a young apprentice, C. B. Thompson, was 50 minutes in the sea before he was rescued by one of the ship’s boats. The Port Fremantle arrived in Auckland to-day from London.
“Luckily I came up almost immediately and struck out to clear the screws,” said Thompson, describing the experience which occurred lu days ago. The quartermaster saw him fall, and gave the alarm. The ship hove to and a lifeboat was lowered. It almost capsized, and threw the chief officer into the sea. Another boat got away and rescued Thompson 50 minutes Idter.—(P.A.)
