CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 26. . The New Zealand chess championship began at Dunedin to-day, and will finish on January 3. There are 12 competitors in the championship, including T. Lepviikpian, of Wellington, who is defending the title he has held for the last two years, and R. G. Wade, who was champion in 1944 and 1945. In the major open tournament there are 26 competitors who are not engaged in the championship. Results.—
Championship.—First round: R. G. Wade (Wellington) beat W. M. Stewart (Christchurch), C. B. Newick (Auckland) beat G. E. Trundle (Auckland). A. E. Neild (Sydney) beat W. E. Moore (Christchurch).
H. McNabb (Nelson) beat W. Lang (Dunedin), R. O. Scott (Wellington) and J. F. Lang (Dunedin) will continue their game to-morrow.
