BOARDING HOUSE ACCOMMODATION

NEW REGULATIONS MADE A long list of regulations defining adequate standards for living accommodation in New Zealand is set out in an Order-in-Council issued this week. In 22 clauses, the regulations define the sizes of rooms and the minimum of sleeping, .kitchen and bathroom accommodation fofr a given number of tenants, and gives power to local authorities to maintain a register of boardinghouses or lodging-houses, in which there are two or more dwelling units. Several paragraphs of the order set out regulations designed to prevent overcrowding. For instance, a house used as a boarding-house is deemed to be overcrowded if it has not adequate living-room and dining-room accommodation in addition to the kitchen. One bathroom must be available for use by every 10 persons, or part of 10. The amount of sleeping room to be provided is also regulated. Special provision is made in the regulations for not enforcing them until alternative accommodation is found for existing tenants.
