BRITISH COAL FOR EUROPE
PRICES SAID TO BE TOO HIGH (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, December 10. There are indications that European importers find the prices quoted for British coal too high. The National Coal Board is now prepared to offer 50,000 tons at £3 15s a ton plus 10s a ton freight charge. According to reports from Sweden and Belgium, importers there claim that they can buy Polish coal in larger quantities at £2 18s a ton. They contend that the margin is too great even though the British coal is of better quality than the Polish. The Coal Board contends that even in Britain the class of coal it is offering for export sells at £2 10s a ton, and that it cannot economically sell it abroad at less than the prices quoted to the Belgians and the Swedes.
