Mason, at a meeting of the Canterbury Surf Association, when the chairman (Mr A. T. F. Stokes) asked whether, in view of the present outbreak of infantile paralysis, a patrol should be appointed at Sumner. Proposals for establishing beach patrols at the three main beaches of Sumner, New Brighton and North Beach were then discussed, and the final selection of the patrols and the dates on which they should begin to operate were left in the hands of a special committee.
