LYTTELTON NEWS

MAGISTRATE’S COURT

David Vivian Rees, aged 26 years, a ship’s fireman, in the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Messrs W. T. Lester and W. T. Gower, Justices of the Peace, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting Detective E. G. Ward, while he was in the execution of his duty. Detective Ward said that on Tuesday evening he saw Rees, who is a member of the crew of the overseas ship Mahana, assaulting a young seaman who was on duty at the gangway. He intervened, and told Rees that he was a detective. Rees then attacked him. He threw Rees, and then warned him to go aboard his ship. Rees again attacked, and was again warned. Another fireman took charge of Rees, and was escorting him aboard when the accused broke loose and again attacked the witness. The witness than arrested him.

Rees told the Court that he did not know that Ward was a police officer. He was convicted and fined £5.
