RETICULATING WHARVES FOR ELECTRICITY

GOVERNMENT GRANT WANTED Advice had been received from the Marine Department that it considered the board well able to bear the total cost (£1450) of reticulating the wharves with electricity, said the secretary (Mr A. L. Burk) at yesterday’s meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. He added that most other harbour boards had received from the department some recognition of their efforts in reticulating their wharves, and he would be disappointed if the board allowed the matter to rest. Some explanation was due from the department, as a principle was involved.

Mr J. K. McAlpine, M.P., and the chairman (Mr W. S- Mac Gibbon) both said that pressure had been brought to bear on the board by the department to have the reticulation done. The board went into committee to hear a statement by Mr McAlpine, and on resuming in open meeting carried a motion by Mr McAlpine requesting a grant from the Marine Department because the request for the work had come from the department and had been pressed by it. The board suggested a subsidy on a basis of at least £ for £.
