INTER-AMERICAN DEFENCE
TREATY RATIFIED BY UtS. SENATE (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 8. The United States Senate ratified the inter-American Defence Treaty by 72 votes te epe to-day. The sole opponent was Senator Eugene Milliken (Republican, Colorado). Ratification by the House of Representatives is not required. The treaty, which was signed at Rio de Janeiro in September, pledges the American Republics to invoke sanctions against aggressors if such action is approved by a two-thirds majority. Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg (Republican, Michigan), who strongly supported ratification of the treaty, paid that it contained “np paralysing veto.” It came at a significant moment to demonstrate thg solidarity of the Westprn Hemisphere. ’‘This is a true partnership, representing the greatest adyanee ever made in the business of collective peace,” he said.
