U.S. OCCUPATION COSTS
INCREASED GRANT SOUGHT BRITAIN’S DIFFICULTIES A FACTOR (I fe- J?* 15 ’* WASHINGTON, Dee. 8 The Army Department asked Congress to-day to supplement tfie grant for oppunation expenses this financial year fiy 48Q,Q0Q,Q0Q dollars. The Secretary of the Army (Mr Kenneth Royall) told the Senate Appropriations Committee that this would iperease the year’s total occupation costs to 1,100,060,000 dollars. He said that. the additional amount was necessary because'Britain was uniable to pay half the share of the cost m Germany apd because of erqp losses in Germany apd Japan and other factors. A combination of cold weather and drought had reduced the estimate ef German crops by more than 1,400,660 tons of food, expressed in terms of bread grain. In Japan, crops were 700,000 tons below the estimate, and this had reduced by more than 400,0Q0 tops the amppnt of fodd available for the ration.
