REPORTS SUBMITTED TO MEETING
The Young Contingent of the Victoria League realised about £250 at the ball held last month in honour of the Royal wedding. This sum will be used for the relief of distress overseas. These details were supplied to the Victoria League at a meeting held yesterday. The ball was sponsored by the four Empire societies, and at the meeting yesterday Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp, who presided, congratulated the Young Contingent and the ball committee on the success of the gathering in spite of serious setbacks.
The Young Contingent, it was reported, has a membership of 272, 86 of whom joined during the last year. Lady Clark-Hall reported on the continued success of tne British War Wives’ Club, members of which met weekly at her home, and said that new arrivals in Christchurch from Britain had been welcomed by the club. Letters of thanks for cases of food, parcels of baby clothes, parcels of warm clothing for adults, and parcels of soap had been received from England recently, the secretary (Miss M. Skoglund) reported, and the contents had been distributed among needy families.
Miss M. A. Ray. who is in charge of the league’s correspondence scheme, said she had received requests for penfriends from such outposts as the Bahama Islands. Mauritius. Malta, Pitcairn Island, Fiji, and Tonga, and additional requests from China. Switzerland, and South America. During the last two months, 243 names had been sent to inquirers for pen friends overseas.
Mrs Tripp appealed for magazines and books for the reception centre that is being established at Wigram to recdive 300 new arrivals, who are expected from Britain on January 25. Parcels may be left at the Empire Societies’ rooms, 66 Cathedral square.
