WINNING OWNERS AT RICCARTON

RACING

STAKES WIDELY DISTRIBUTED As is usual at the principal meetings at Riccarton, stakes at the New Zealand Cup meeting were widely distributed. Beau Le Havre’s success in the New Zealand Cup and the Churchill Stakes and his second placing in the Canterbury Cup earned his owner. Mr M. J. Nash, of Takanini, a total of £4650 in stakes and placed him well clear in the winning owners’ list. The next most successful was Mr A. F. Speight, who races Signal Officer. The latter's wins in the Metropolitan Handicap and the Canterbury Cup and a fourth placing in the New Zealand Cup returned £2900. Howe’s successes in the Riccarton Handicap and the Jockey Club Handicap and a second placing in the Fendalton Handicap returned his owner, Mr J. H. Marshall, £2OOO. Liebestraum’s win in the New Zealand Derby returned the same sum for his owners, Messrs W. R. Richmond and T. R. George. Mr J. M. Samson, who races Trident, winner of the Welcome Stakes, Lexia, and Robin Redbreast, received £lB5O from their combined efforts, and the Stewards’ Handicap winner. Wantwood, earned £1450 for Mr W. D. McLeod.

Other successful owners were:—Messrs A. T. Donnelly and D. E. Wanklyn £l2OO, H. O. Batchelor £1065, R. W. H. HOlden £lOOO, D. P. Wilson £lOOO, G. A. Lang £lOOO, Mrs L. M. Dentice £9lO, Messrs R. J. Scholium £B5O, R. J. Murphy £B2O, Nirs N. H. Barlow £550, Mr E. E. Steele £oso. Mr and Mrs P. Menzies £545, Messrs J. G. Donald £5OO, C. Cunningham £450. A. Louisson £4OO, J. H. Grigg £390, C. B. Chapman £390, L. W. Tlmperley £390, estate H. J Riddle £375, A. N. Smith £365, Mrs W. McKenzie £325, Messrs F. A. Roberts £325, N. H. Barlow and W. B. Owen £325. H. C. Collinson £3OO. Change of Quarters The Mosgiel trainer, J. A. Wilson, did not take Loma Leigh back with him when he returned home from Riccarton. He has an addition to his team in Lovemorn, which has been trained by F. Christmas. Lovemorn is a useful galloper, but the firm tracks are not to her liking. Appeal Against Suspension J. A. McFarlane has appealed against the decision of the judicial stewards of the Canterbury Jockey Club in suspending him for 12 months for failing to ride Indian Dawn on her merits in the Fendalton Handicap, and the appeal will be heard at a meeting of the Canterbury District Committee on Friday. Broke Down in Race Cipher broke down on the home turn during the running of the Members’ Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, and he will need a long spell. Cipher was in sixth place at the time and was going well. It was bad luck for his owner, Mr T. C. Robinson, and his trainer, G. S. Barr, as Cipher looked a good prospect for the holiday fixtures He had won twice in nine starts this season. To Miss Auckland Trip Golden Amber was nominated for the two-year-old events at Auckland, but she will not make the trip. Her trainer, E. A. Rosewame, will give her time to freshen up, and her next appearance may be at Trentham next month. Golden Amber missed the jump out in the Irwell Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, and when her rider. A. J. Stokes, saw that she had no chance of catching the leaders he wisely did not knock her' about.

Silver Link Arriving at Riccarton Silver Link, the sole remaining Amtralian entry in the Auckland Cup, is due to arrive at Riccarton this morning and will enter L. J. Ellis’s stable. Silver Link has had several starts in Australia this season, but a decision on his Auckland programme will not be made until it is seen what his condition is after he settles down in his new quarters. Starting in the Auckland Cup would involve another long trip to Auckland on top of his recent journey, and in the circumstances Silver Link would hardly be expected to be at his best, and an alternative programme might be considered. Great Trek Shows True Form After being unbeaten in his four starts as a two-year-old. Great Trek disappointed when he failed to run into a place in the Wellington Guineas last October. That race was his first appearance as a three-year-old, and it was afterwards apparent that he was in need of a race. Last Saturday Great Trek gave an indication of his true ability when he outclassed the open sprinters in the Railway Handicap at Woodville, and ran the six furlongs in the good time of Imin 12 2-ssec. He shared the pacemaking with King of Quiz to the straight, and then had no difficulty in drawing out to win by six lengths Great Trek is engaged in the Railway Handicap, King's Plate, Great Northern Derby, at Ellerslie, and in the Railway Handicap has been penalised 41b for his success last Saturday, and he now carries 8-4, which is weight-for-age. The Railway Han-dicap-Great Northern Derby double is not often attempted in the same season, and the last horse to accomplish the feat was Gay Blonde, in 1934-35. In the Railway Handicap, Gay Blonde carried 7-13, which was also weight-for-age. Great Trek is so far untested for stamina, and it is not known whether he will contest the Great Northern Derby.

To Race at Otaki C. G. Humphries has .decided not to send Faithful Pal to Auckland with Royal Tan and Magnaform, but the Man’s Pal gelding will probably go north to-night to contest the Waitohu Hack Handicap at the Otaki-Maori meeting on Saturday. Forward Showing Considering that it was his first race since he ran unplaced in the Duke of Gloucester Cup at the Grand National meeting, Forage made a very forward showing when he led for a mile and a half in the Port Cooper Hurdles at Riccarton last Saturday, and he should be very near his best for the hurdle events at the Dunedin Cup meeting. Out For Spell J. C. Tomkinson has sent Wane back to his owner, and the big Defaulter gelding will be given a few months* spell before being prepared for jumping events next winter. Although his subsequent efforts did not quite fulfil the promise he showed when he won the Syx Hack Hurdles at the Grand National meeting, Wane has been a payable proposition as a hurdler, having won £1175 in stakes since August. Remained at Riccarton When R. E. McLellan returned to Invercargill last Sunday he left Signal Officer at Riccarton in charge of C. G. Humphries. The latter trainer will leave for Auckland with Royal Tan and Magnaform on Friday night, and McLellan is returning from Invercargill to take Signal Officer with them. Signal Officer was at the track ’yesterday morning, and the hardy Salmagundi gelding does not seem to have taken any harm from his hard race in the Canterbury Cup last Saturday

Suffered Similar Fate In suffering a defeat in the Canterbury Cup, Beau Le Havre followed in the footsteps of a previous New Zealand Cup winner in Golden Souvenir. Two years ago Golden Souvenir won the New Zealand Cup and the Churchill Stakes, and looked certain to win the Canterbury Cup and complete his treble for the meeting, but he was surprisingly defeated by Miss Medley by half a head. After he won the New Zealand Cup and the Churchill Stakes. Beau Le Havre looked certain to better Golden Souvenir’s record, but he suffered an even narrower defeat by Signal Officer. Time To Develop Celtic Chief ran a useful race in each of his three starts at Riccarton and promises to be very useful later on. He is still a leggy colt, and his trainer, A. B. Stove, has now turned him out for a spell to give him a chance to develop.
