ESCAPE FROM FIRE
MRS S. G. HOLLAND AND HER MOTHER (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, November 19. Among those who had lucky escapes in Ballantyne’s fire were the wife and the mother-in-law of the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland). Mr Holland, who returned to Wellington this afternoon by air, told “The Press” that Mrs Holland and his mother-in-law (Mrs Drayton) were both in Ballantyne’s when the fire broke out. Mrs Holland was near the •main door, but Mrs Drayton was buying some stamps at a booth some 20 feet or more inside. Mrs Drayton. was waiting for her change when she noticed flames and smoke. Without waiting for the change she hurried for the door, although the girl at the counter told her “everything was under control.” By the time Mra Drayton reached the floor and looked back she could not see the booth for names, and she had been worried about the safety of the girl who had been serving her. Mr Holland said that Mr A. Stewart who was missing, had been his best mend.
