BELMORAL

TROTTING

GOOD PROSPECTS AT WELLINGTON The well-bred trotter, Bel moral, will have his first start since being trained at Tefnpleton by C. R. Berkett, in the Sil verstream Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. Now a five-year-old gelding, Belmoral showed good form for J. T. Paul, who trained him at Mangere, to be placed in his last four starts last season, his record including wins in the Ohawe Handicap at the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting on April 7 and in the Circuit Handicap at the Manawatu Trotting Club’s meeting on April 12. At his last start, Belmoral finished a short neck behind Tell Us in the Te Kawa Handicap at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting on May 24. A product of planned breeding, Belmoral. which was bred by J. T. Paul, is by the imported Belwin horse, Worthy Belwin, from Bessie Bingen, which left other winners at the trotting gait in Bessie Parrish and Lady Bunker to Guy Parrish.

Bred by the late Mr E. X. Le Lievre, Bessie Bingen is by Nelson Bingen, which was imported from America in 1914 by Mr Le Lievre, from Berthabell, which was also imported by Mr Le Lievre about the same time. Foaled in 1912, Nelson Bingen, a successful performer and a noted sire, was by May King (by Electioneer, a son of Hambletonian 10) from Young Miss, by Young Jim from Miss Mambrino, by Red Wilkes from Miss Clark. Nelson Bingen's dam, Suzette Baron, was by Baron Wilkes from Suzette Nelson, by Nelson from Louetta, by Kentucky Prince from a Smith mare. George Wilkes, the sire of Baron Wilkes, was a well-known son of Hambletonian 10. Berthabell, which was foaled in Kentucky in 1909, was by Peter the Great (2min 7ssec), by Pilot Medium, a son of Happy Medium, which was a son of Hambletonian 10. Her dam. Corona Mac, was by Wilkes Boy, a son of George Wilkes and Betty Brown. Only a young trotter, Belmoral has already shown ability in keeping with his pedigree and the Silverstream Handicap may prove a stepping-stone to much better company for him. Jottings C. V. May had Loyal Nurse looking a model of condition at the cup meeting at Addington, but she refused to race generously. On Saturday, Loyal Nurse began fast to be in third place to Integrity and Navigate at the end of a furlong in the New Zealand Pacing Free-for-All, but she soon went to a break and dropped back to the rear of the field. Tautuku gained his third placing in his four starts this season when he followed Keymaster and First Arion home in the Waverley Trot Handicap at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. An aged gelding, Tautuku is by Grattan Loyal from Lady Voisin, which is by Cathedral Chimes from a Bellman mare. Jeeves indicated that he is returning to his best form by a solid effort to finish in fourth place to Direct Medium, Johnnie Lawn and Scholarship in the Lighting Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Marcia should race well from the scratch mark in the Advance Handicap at Wellington this week. Finished Fast After being in fourth place to Ann Scott, Communique, and Ben Adam when the field settled down in the Durham Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday, Lone Raider lost his position and he had eight horses in front of him with half a mile to go. Once he secured a clear run. Lone Raider finished fast in fourth place to Jackie Guy, Johnnie Lawn, and Lady Ngaio. A son of Raider and Belle Logan, Lone Raider appeared to improve with racing at the cup meeting and he should be near his best form when he parades for the £1250 Hutt Park Handicap at Wellington on Saturday. Useful Type Loyal Boy, which is trained at Temuka by T. H. Gunning for' Mr A. J. West, was sent out fourth favourite for theShirley Handicap at the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday, but he lost his chance when he dwelt at the start. A useful type of pacer by Grattan Loyal . from a Harold hotnschild mare, Loyal Boy raced well in Southland last season to be placed in eight of his races, his record including a win over Sterling Hall in the fast time of 3min 17 4-ssec in the first division of the Otapiri Trot Handicap and a win over Glengarry in the Hokonui fTrot Handicap in 3min 18 l-ssec at the Winton Jockey Club’s meeting on February 1. If Gunning can persuade Loyal Boy to reproduce that form he should have little difficulty in winning races in Canterbury. By Sandydale Adria, which Is owned by Messrs Hempseed Bros., Waiuta, has a filly foal -at foot by, Sandydale, and she is to be mated with the same sire again this season. A sister to a winner in Believe Me, Adria is by Quite Sure from a good perforroer at the trotting gait in Biddy Parrish, which is by Guy Parrish from Rose Peters, by Petereta from Rose Elect, by Electioneer from Wild Rose, by CMlde Harold. Did Not Stay Red Hussar, the favourite for the Manchester Handicap, disappointed his admirers when he failed to stay on over the concluding stages of the two-mile journey at Addington on Saturday. Red Hussar set the pace for nearly a mile and he then surrendered the lead to Miranda Scott. After following her until about three furlongs from home, Red Hussar weakened and he was sixth to finish. Broke Up J. Washington had Gamble King looking* well when he paraded for the G. W. C. Smithson Handicap at Addington on Saturday, but the Gamble—Beverley King gelding lost his chance after making a smart beginning when he broke and ran off the course before two furlongs had been covered. , Weakened Fantom’s supporters were jubilant when he took the lead at the end of five furlongs m the New Zealand Champion Trotting Free-for-All at Addington on Saturday. Once he was in the lead. Fantom set a fast pace, but he could not sustain his effort when the straight was reached for the sprint home, and he was seventh to finish. Lease of Addington.—A final draft lease of the Addington trotting grounds to the ew Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club *° r a ? a PP r oved yesterday by the North Canterbury Hospital Board, and l ive , n - for the board’s seal to be fixed to the lease. Mr C. G. McKellar said that the lease was very different ? ri^ inal . iease - as it was now laid sxsrt that the land mUSt be used £or
