FIRE IN DRY-CLEANING PLANT

ROOF, CEILING, AND WALL DAMAGED A hole about six feet square was burned in the roof, a patch of ceiling and part of a wall was destroyed by a fire which broke out in premises occupied by Taylor’s Cleaners and Dyers, Ltd., in Victoria street, shortly before 10 o’clock last evening. The Christchurch Fire Brigade opened a window on the upper floor of the twostorey building, to direct water on to the burning timbers. As the fire was hard to get at, it was some time before the brigade was able to ensure that it was out. Meanwhile, trams both outward and in-ward-bound on the Papanui route, were held up by hoses across the tracks, and the Tramway Board made a start with a relief bus service. Within a quarter of an hour, trams were able to pass; but the traffic was still being re-directed by inspectors. A crowd of more than 100 persons gathered quickly to watch the fire. The brigade was called to the same premises earlier in the evening to a wall fire. , Another call was received at 12.4 p.m. to a house at 15 Inglis street, occupied by John C. A. Murray. When workmen were burning off paint, the building caught fire and the roof and gaibles were damaged.
