PROPOSALS FOR PALESTINE
U.S. Statement On Partition CHANGES SOUGHT IN BOUNDARY (Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 29. The United States moved to-day to whittle down the size of the Jewish State that would be created out of a partitioned Palestine. The American delegate (Mr Herschel Johnson) told the United Nations subcommittee on Palestine that Jaffa, which is a predominantly Arab city, should go to the Arabs instead of to the Jews, as proposed by, the special United Nations Commission of Inquiry. The proposed Jewish State should be trimmed at other points, too, so that Palestine would be divided on more of a 50-50 basis. Mr’ Johnson added that he would make a statement this week on how the United States proposed the partition should be carried out. The Reuters correspondent at Lake Success says that the establishment of an interim administration for Palestine under Security Council control, somewhat on the lines of the Trieste authority, is being discussed at Lake Success. Circles close to the Soviet delegation intimate that Russia would favour putting Palestine under Security Council jurisdiction until suitable local governments could be established in the Jewish and Arab States.
