HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION
♦ POLLS UNNECESSARY IN MOST DISTRICTS For the four city seats on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, two of the former representatives would be seeking reelection, said the secretary of the board (Mr A. L. Burk), yesterday. The two representatives were the present chairman (Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon) and Mr F. W. Freeman. The other two city representatives were Messrs T. H. McCombs. M.P., and A. R. Guthrey, the latter being appointed to the board this year to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr R. Browning. The Government nominee on the board (Mr R. E. Cairns), had received an extension of his term and Mr Humphrey Holderness had been returned unonposed, said Mr Burk. Elections in the following districts would be unnecessary, said Mr Burk: Kaiapoi and Rangiora (Mr C. W. Tyler), Ashburton Borough and Ashburton County (Messrs E. C. Bathurst and P. J. Mowat). Waimairi County and Riccarton Borough (Mr J. Halligan), and in the counties of Paparua. Malvern, Halswell. Heathcote, and Selwyn (Messrs W. F. McArthur and R. T. McMillan). The sitting member for the boroughs of Lyttelton and Akaroa, and the counties of Akaroa, Wairewa, and Mount Herbert (Mr F. E. Sutton), would be opposed by Mr W. B. Laing (president of the Lyttelton branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union, and the member of the board who was appointed this year to replace Mr Langdale Hunt as representative of the counties of Paparua, Malvern, and Heathcote). For the counties of Cheviot, Amuri, Waipara. Kowai, and Ashley, the sitting member (Mr J. K. McAlpine, M.P.) would be -opposed by Mr R. Turnbull, said Mr Burk.
