AIR FORCE DRAFT FOR JAPAN
REPLACEMENT FOR NO. 14 SQUADRON (PA.) AUCKLAND, October 27. Replacement drafts of airmen for No 14 (Fighter). Squadron, R.N.Z.A.F., New Zealand’s unit in the British Commonwealth air forces in Japan are now being assembled for a year’s duty to relieve men who have been with the squadron for their 12 months overseas’ service. The first draft has just reached Japan and successive parties will be flown from New Zealand in aircraft of No. 41 (Transport) Squadron based at Whenuapai. The change-over now being begun is the second since No. 14 Squadron was first sent to Japan early in 1946. As in the previous change-over the present move is expected to extend over about four month! This method is adopted to avoid introducing a completely inexperienced unit. The airmen to go to Japan are being chosen from Air Force units in various parts of New Zealand on a voluntary basis. All non-technical posts have already been filled. The strength of the unit is approximately 280 all ranks.
