LOYAL PETER AND TURCO

TROTTING

STRONG BRACKET IN NEW ZEALAND CUP The Addington trainer, G. S. Smith, will be represented by a strong bracket in Loyal Peter and Turco in the New Zealand Cup at Addington on Saturday. An aged gelding by Grattan Loyal from Erin’s Fortune, Loyal Peter indicated that he was at the top of his form when he led all the .way. to win the Flying Handicap by two lengths from DiTlondale at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on October 11. Loyal Peter was trained for his early races by G. Waite at Tapanui, and at his first appearance as a four-year-old in the 1942-43 season he won the Trial Handicap at the Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting on March 20, 1943. After being unplaced at his next start, he was put aside lor the rest of the term.

In the next season he paid expenses with seven minor placings in 12 starts, and at his first start in the 1944-45 term he won the Brockville Handicap from Elation at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting. After four unplaced efforts he then won the F. Wallis Memorial Handicap from Liberty Bond at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting on December 26, 1944. Loyal Peter joined S. A. Edwards’s team in the early part of the 1945-46 season, and at his first start for him he gave a fine performance to win the President’s Handicap from Emulous at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on October 22. In that race he set the pace and hung “on to win by three-quarters of a length. Edwards adopted the same tactics with him when he won the Railway Handicap from Lucky Loyal at the Canterbury Park Trotting summer meeting. An unplaced performance followed and he then gave a high-class display to lead all the way in the Summer Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on February 2, winning by half a length from Liberty Bond in 3min 14 4-ssec.

Loyal Peter was then transferred to J. Young's team and at his first start in the 1946-47 season he won the Canterbury Handicap from Dundee Sandy. In that race he led all the way and he did not appear to be extended to win by three lengths in 4min 20 3-ssec, which was three-fifths of a second faster than Integrity was required to record to win the New Zealand Cup earlier in the day.

After three unplaced efforts. Loyal Peter was placed in Smith’s care. In his first three starts for him, he gained two second placings and then followed up with a wir. over Gamble King in the Wairarapa Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on May 3, and a win over Cameronian in the Winter Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on May 17. In the latter event, he led all the way to register 3min 35 3-ssec for the mile and five furlongs on a holding track.

A grand stayer. Loyal Peter’s record includes wins over many of the best pacers in commission. Unfortunately he does not begin correctly in all his races but, on his best behaviour, he may prove capable of extending the cup field this wegk. Turco’s Prospects

“My horse is just as good as ever he was,’’ said Mr A. V. Prenderville, who races Turco in partnership with Mr J. X. Ferguson, before the Hannon Memorial Handiap at Oamaru on Monday. TTurco looked well when he was paraded, but alter beginning smoothly and following Navigate, Local Gold, Knave of Diamonds, and Aberhall in the early stages, he lost his chance when he struck trouble and broke with about three furlongs to go. An aged gelding by Rey de Oro from Wrackoda, Turco was lightly raced in the early part of his career. After gaining three minor placings in his six starts when trained at Addington by L. A. Maidens, he was given a spell and later transferred to Smith's stable.

Under Smith’s guidance, Turco quickly showed good form and he raced consistently to gain six wins and seven minor placings in 19 starts. Last season Turco added a win, a dead-heat, and six minor placings to his record. Turqp raced well at the cup meeting at Addington last year to dead-heat with Haughty in the New Zealand Premier Sprint Championship and to win the Ollivier Handicap by two lengths from Countless in 3min 29sec for the mile and five furlongs. Loyal Peter and Turco both have some outstanding efforts to their credit, and they must be conceded a good chance in the big race on Saturday. Jottings
