DEMAND FOR TREE SEEDS
COLLECTION IN SELWYN PLANTATIONS One of the duties of the staff of the Selwyn Plantations Board is the collecting of seed from mature trees in reserves. Keen attention is paid to the quality of the seed because, in addition to its use in the board's own regeneration programme, it is in steady demand by local bodies throughout New Zealand in search of reliable seed for tree planting. The report of the superintendent (Mr E. A. Cooney) to a board meeting on Tuesday showed that the costs of seed collecting from plantations had more than doubled since the gales of 1945 because of the difficulty of finding good parent stock among wind-dam-aged trees. During September, 12 sacks of pine cones were taken from two plantations and sales* of pinus insignis seed included 401 b to a forestry organisation in Australia. There was still a good demand for both insignia and oregon seed in New Zealand.
