DRIVER-TESTING MACHINES
DISPLAY AT INDUSTRIES FAIR Two driver-testing machines, the only ones of their kind in the Southern Hemisphere, will be on display in the Transport Department's bay in the Government Court, at the New Zealand Industries Fair. One of the machines is to test impairment to eyesight. sensitivity to glare, and glare recovery, and the other reaction times. The machines, which were specially built in the United States so as to reproduce actual road conditions as nearly as possible, were on display at the centennial exhibition in Wellington in 1940. Last Easter they were sent to Sydney for the Royal Show. The department will allow members of the public to take the tests and later will supply a report. Also in the bay' will be a map of Christchurch showing where accidents have occurred in the city since January 1, 1946. Places where fatal accidents have occurred are marked with a red cross, and there are 22 of these. Other spots marked with a red circle indicate where a non-fatal accident that has been reported to the police has occurred. The map shows that there have been about 800 in a period of less than 22 months.
