BOXING
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS
GATE TAKINGS £1545 "No one interested ia boxing could feel anything but pleased at the results ox the New Zealand boxing championships, which were held in Christchurch for the first time since 1925.” said Mr G. W Bettie, president of the Canterbury Boxing Association, at a meeting of the ex - ecutive last evening. Mr Bettie said the report showed a profit of more than £lOOO, and the attendance created a record for any indoor boxing tournament held in New Zealand. The gate takings were £1545 19s 6d, and it should be remembered that last year, when the championships were held in Auckland, the takings did not exceed £lOOO. Although few of the officers responsible for the conduct of the meeting had had any experience of running a New Zealand championship meeting, their efforts had been appreciated by visitors from all parts of New Zealand. Mr F. Allen and Mr J. Adams were •appointed delegates to the special conference to be held in Wellington to consider the report on the Murphy-Jones proceedings. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to K. Murfltt, winner of the New Zealand feather-weight championship, and to present to G. H. Murfitt a replica of the J. Thompson shield Which he had won for the third year in succession. The followirtg awards were made:— Fairbairn Cup (awarded to outstanding boxer of the year).—K. Murfitt. J. Thompson Shield (for trainer of most winners at tournaments),—G. H. Murfitt. Newburgh prize (for greatest service to boxing during the year).—Mr R. A. Borgefeldt. Cup (for most improved boxer). —H. Miller.
